PGT Window Replacement: The Austin Owner’s Guide
If you have a PGT window with a failed part – a fogged glass unit, a broken balance, a stripped operator, or a warped sash – we replace it. Typical installed PGT window replacement in Austin runs between $325 and $1,200 per window depending on the series, glass package, and whether you’re replacing a component or the full sash and frame. Most PGT parts are in stock locally or arrive within three to five business days, and we can usually complete the swap in one visit once the part is in hand.
Here’s how most Austin homeowners discover the failure: a window that suddenly won’t stay open, condensation trapped between the panes that never clears, or a crank that spins without moving the sash. In Travis County’s heat-and-humidity cycle, PGT windows work hard. The vinyl expand and contract across 40-degree daily temperature swings in spring and fall. Seals fatigue. Hardware loosens. The good news is that PGT builds windows in modular pieces, which means the failed part can usually be replaced without tearing out the whole opening.
If you know the PGT series and the symptom, you’re already 80 percent of the way to a quote. This page covers what fails first, what it costs to fix here in Austin, and how to avoid buying the wrong part.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT makes several window lines, and parts are not universal across all of them. The most common PGT series in Austin homes are the WinGuard (impact-rated, required in many coastal and newer Travis County builds), Spectrum (vinyl single-hung and casement), ClassicVue (aluminum frame), and EnergyVue (higher-efficiency glass packages). Each series has its own balance system, locking hardware, and sash profile. A Spectrum balance will not seat in a WinGuard frame, even if the sash width is identical.
The fastest way to identify your PGT window is the product label on the frame. Open the sash and look along the top or side jamb. PGT etches or stickers a series code and sometimes a manufacturing date. If the label is gone, measure the visible glass width and height to the nearest ⅛ inch and note whether the frame is vinyl or aluminum, and whether the window is single-hung, casement, or horizontal slider. With those three facts, we can usually identify the series over the phone.
One PGT-specific compatibility gotcha we see regularly in Austin: WinGuard impact sashes use a heavier balance than Spectrum sashes of the same size. The impact laminate adds roughly 4 to 7 pounds per sash. If you install a standard-weight replacement balance on an impact sash, the window will not stay up – and it can slam shut hard enough to crack the corner welds. When we order or pull a PGT balance, the impact rating is the first thing we verify.
For most PGT repairs, we recommend OEM parts. PGT’s warranty support for non-impact replaced parts can be limited, but OEM balances, locks, and sashes seat correctly the first time, and that matters when you are matching factory weatherstripping profiles. For a handful of nonstructural parts – pivot bars, tilt latches, some roller assemblies – we use aftermarket equivalents from the same Texas suppliers other PGT service shops use. The material quality is equivalent, and we put that choice in writing on the quote.
Signs Your PGT Window Replacement Is Failing
Here are the five failure patterns we see most often in Austin PGT windows:
- Fog or condensation between the panes. The insulated glass unit’s edge seal has failed, letting humid Austin air inside. The desiccant inside the spacer absorbs what it can, but once saturated, the fog becomes permanent. This is a glass-unit replacement, not a frame problem.
- Sash falls or won’t stay open. A broken or fatigued balance. PGT balances are spring-loaded systems rated for a specific sash weight. When the spring fails, the sash drops. On double-hung windows, you may hear a scraping sound as the balance shoe drags on the track.
- Crank spins but sash doesn’t move. The operator gear teeth are stripped, or the crank handle has rounded out. Common on PGT casement windows after years of Texas dust working into the gear mechanism. Sometimes the operator arm is bent rather than the gear being stripped.
- Window won’t lock or the lock feels loose. The lock’s cam or keeper has worn, or the sash has sagged enough that the lock no longer lines up. A sagging sash on a PGT aluminum window often means the corner keys have loosened, not just that the lock is bad.
- Drafts or water staining at the frame corners. The weatherstripping has compressed or torn, and in some cases the frame corner weld has separated. Water staining around the interior sill after a driving rain is the tell. This is a repair we never ignore – water getting behind the frame leads to rot and mold inside the wall cavity.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what PGT window replacement parts and labor typically run in Austin. These are installed prices, including the part, labor, and the written Hale guarantee:
- Insulated glass unit (IGU) replacement: $325 to $650 per sash, depending on glass size, Low-E coating, and whether it’s impact-rated. Impact glass runs higher, particularly on WinGuard units.
- Balance replacement (single or double-hung): $175 to $350 per window, including both balances when applicable.
- Casement operator or crank replacement: $150 to $300 per window.
- Lock or keeper replacement: $85 to $180 per window.
- Full sash replacement: $450 to $1,200 per window, depending on series and glass package.
The spread in each range comes down to three things: the PGT series (WinGuard parts cost more than Spectrum), whether the glass is impact-rated, and the window’s size. A 60-inch-wide WinGuard IGU is a different job than a 24-inch Spectrum unit. We put the exact price in writing before any work starts. If the new part fails within the covered period, the repair visit is free.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things you can safely check yourself. If a window is sticky, clean the track. If a crank is loose, tighten the set screw. If a lock feels dirty, wipe the cam with a dry cloth and try it again. These are low-risk, two-minute checks that occasionally solve the problem without a service call.
Where DIY goes wrong is with PGT balances and casement operators. Balances are under spring tension, and removing one without the right release technique can send the metal shoe flying. Casement operators sit inside a narrow sash channel and require the right PGT-specific track size. We’ve taken more than a few calls from Austin homeowners who bought a generic balance online, installed it, and then called us when the window still would not hold – or after the sash dropped and cracked the corner. A window that almost fits is a window that leaks, and a balance that almost fits is a window that falls. If the part you’re looking at involves a spring, a cable, or anything under tension, call us at (254) 736-6486 and let us look first.
FAQs
PGT balances and hardware typically last 10 to 15 years in the Austin area. IGUs last 10 to 20 years, with the shorter end more common on west-facing walls that absorb afternoon sun. The edge seal is the point of failure, and Texas heat accelerates it. If your PGT window is 12 years old or more and one IGU has failed, expect the others in the same sun exposure to follow within a few years.
Some components can be repaired: we re-lubricate and realign operators, replace tilt latches, and adjust or re-key locks when the hardware is intact. But balances, glass units, and cracked sashes are replaced, not repaired. A damaged balance spring cannot be re-tensioned safely, and a failed IGU seal cannot be restored. Call (254) 736-6486 with your series and symptom and we’ll tell you which path applies.
Most single-part replacements – an IGU, a balance, an operator – take 45 to 90 minutes once the part is in our hands. If we need to order a PGT sash or custom glass unit, expect three to five business days for delivery, then another hour or so for the install. Larger multi-window jobs are quoted with a clear timeline in the written estimate.
We keep the most common PGT parts in local inventory: Spectrum and WinGuard balances in standard sizes, casement operators, tilt latches, and lock sets. We also carry compatible replacements for CGI, CWS, and ES Windows hardware for Austin homes with mixed-brand window packages. Uncommon parts – like a replacement sash for an odd-sized WinGuard unit or impact-rated glass – are ordered direct from PGT supply channels.
